With reference to the rules regarding the way to bring in Italy dogs coming from UE countries and non - UE countries, we refer to what is reported on the website of the Italian Ministry of Health. In short, it is possible to bring dogs in Italy but the procedure is different depending on what country you are travelling from Countries of the European Union or non-UE countries.

 

THERE IS NO OBLIGATION OF ANTI-RABBY VACCINATION FOR ITALIAN PROPERTY DOGS

 

Dogs coming from UE countries
Dogs introduced in Italy must have an UE passport and must be identified by a microchip or a legible tattoo, if applied before 3 July 2011. Passport must attest that rabies vaccination has been administered and, if necessary, it has to certify that a new valid vaccination against rabies has been administered. In case of first vaccination, 21 days must have passed since a dog can enter in the Country. When the number of dogs to bring is more than 5, the movement of the pets must be congruent with the conditions stated in the Directives 92/65/CEE, 90/425/CEE, 91/496/CEE. The conditions fixed for dogs entering in Italy from UE countries can be consulted on website of the European Union in the area dedicated to the transport of dogs, cats and ferret.

Dogs coming from non-EU countries
The rules to be followed to bring in Italy pets up to a maximum of 5 vary depending on whether the Country is on the list drawn up by the European Commission, a list which is published and enclosed to the Rules UE 576/2013. The list is available on the website of the European Union.

1. Dogs coming from a Country included in the above mentioned list must have a health certificate (as from Enclosure II, implementing Decision of the Commission 2011/874/UE, 15 December 2011), issued by a veterinary recognized by the competent Authority of that Country, identified by a microchip or a legible tattoo, if applied before 3 July 2011. The health certificate must attest that rabies vaccination has been administered and, if necessary, it has to certify that a new valid vaccination against rabies has been administered. In case of first vaccination, 21 days must have passed since a dog can enter in the Country.

2. Dogs coming from a Country that is not included in the above mentioned list must be identified by a microchip or a legible tattoo, if applied before 3 July 2011, and must have a health certificate that attests that rabies vaccination has been administered and, if necessary, that a new valid vaccination against rabies has been administered and certify the successful execution of tests against rabies virus, at a Laboratory recognized by the European Commission, with favorable results.
